Employee Group Benefits Specialist

An Employee Benefit Specialist at an insurance brokerage serves as the primary link between agents and insurance carriers, helping agents select, implement, and manage comprehensive benefits packages for their clients. This role combines agent consultation, data analysis, and regulatory expertise to ensure agents offer competitive and compliant benefits while helping clients manage costs.

 

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities vary but generally include:

Agent Consultation and Needs Analysis: Meeting with agents to understand their client鈥檚 needs, budget, and talent attraction/retention goals.

Plan Design and Negotiation: Researching and comparing various insurance products (medical, dental, vision, life, disability plans) and negotiating with carriers for the best rates and coverage options for larger employers.

Administration Support: Assisting agents with the technical administration of benefit plans, including system interactions, data entry, and resolving day-to-day employee issues related to claims or enrollment.

Compliance: Ensuring that all benefit plans and practices comply with federal and state regulations such as ERISA, HIPAA, ACA, and COBRA.

Employee Education: Assisting agents with coordinating annual open enrollment activities, conducting educational sessions, and developing communication materials for employees to help them understand their options.

Financial Strategy & Analytics: Performing cost analyses, monitoring trends, and preparing reports to evaluate the effectiveness and cost of benefit programs.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

Soft Skills: Strong communication, negotiation, analytical, and interpersonal skills are essential for building agent relationships and explaining complex information clearly.

Certifications: Professional certifications such as the Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) or Certified Benefits Professional (CBP) can enhance career prospects.
