For 22 years, Diana Deaver Tomsu worked at the Port of Corpus Christi, serving as an Accounts Receivable Supervisor. Approaching retirement, Diana realized she wanted to do more, so she took the advice of a good friend who had a successful insurance sales career and began exploring the possibility of acquiring an insurance license. She was already familiar with the field, having earlier worked in claims processing for insurance companies and billing in a doctor’s office, so insurance sales was a natural fit for Diana. After earning her license in 2015, she focused on selling life policies and mortgage protection. Like many agents, she experienced early struggles but persevered and soon accomplished success in her side job.
Once she retired, Ms. Tomsu understood she needed to apply for Medicare. The task seemed daunting. Diana researched all that she could find about Medicare so she could select a plan. Then, she realized, “My goodness, if I have to learn so much to pick a plan for myself, why don’t I just learn it and sell it?” With newfound knowledge, Diana found joy in selling Medicare products because she gets to meet her customers one-on-one and face-to-face. She cherishes learning about them and listening to each one’s story. Diana shares that she laughs with them and cries with them as they navigate through life’s ebbs and flows. “I just love my customers. I love helping them, and most of the elderly are the ones that really need our help,” explains the Corpus Christi native. Additionally, Diana reminds her clients that she is available to them whenever they need help. She tells them that if they receive a letter from Medicare or Medicaid that they don’t understand, they should call her. Then, she will come by and review the letter with them and determine how to respond.
In 2019, Diana began looking for a field marketing organization (FMO). She had been recruited by other FMOs outside her city but wanted something local. Around that time, Empower Brokerage offered Corpus Christi agents the opportunity to attend a local seminar. Diana was intrigued, signed up, but later found she was unable to attend the event in Corpus Christi. Shortly after the seminar, Empower’s Regional Sales Director for Corpus Christi, Mario Olivares, contacted Diana. She recalls speaking with him, and he convinced her to partner with the organization to further her career. Since then, and continuing today, when Ms. Tomsu needed guidance, she simply called Empower Brokerage and was able to speak to someone to assist her. She says that if the person answering the phone call or e-mail could not help her, then they got her in contact with someone who could answer her question or fulfill her request. Diana is also appreciative of the National Director of Business Development, Monica Quintana, and Regional Sales Directors Matthew Huerta and Claudia Howard for their support over the years in overseeing the Corpus Christi market. As she embarked on Medicare sales, Diana is grateful to have what she calls a “Medicare Expert” in Empower Brokerage’s Senior Benefit Specialist John Shinn. “He is always so helpful, so kind, and very informative,” says the tenth-year agent.
Since Diana loves talking to people, speaking to potential customers comes easily for her. The Corpus Christi native has participated in Empower Brokerage’s Kiosk Program with Walmart for several years now. When people visit her table and ask what she does, she happily explains about her services, and in return, they begin sharing about themselves and the problems they have. Diana’s empathy for others is genuine and establishes trust with people. Sometimes, these encounters produce customers. She says these individuals appreciate the face-to-face interactions and finding a friend in her who is willing to take the time to listen to them and the details about their situations.
Advice, Hobbies, and Goals
The insurance business can be challenging for new agents, but Diana would encourage those starting a new career in this field to persevere. She says that when agents have resources, guidance, and mentors, like those she has at Empower Brokerage, they will certainly learn and grow their business. Outside of work, Diana treasures time with her family and close friends. She has three lifelong girlfriends from childhood, and they enjoy spending time together talking, playing the Bunco dice game once a month, and going on girls’ trips each year. Diana says their friendships are like therapy for each of them. “Mostly what women need is just other girlfriends to talk with, hang around with, and just have fun with, ” says Diana. Medicare sales keep her busy, but she would like to explore the ACA market, perhaps during this enrollment period. Whatever the insurance product, her clients surely have a dedicated professional eager to serve them. “I do enjoy my job and doing this business,” shares Diana. “I enjoy helping people, and they can always count on me. I’ll always be there for them.”
