Happy National Margarita Day!

Happy National Margarita Day!

February 22nd Is National Margarita Day!

What Is Tequila?

As you may know, tequila is the main alcoholic component in margaritas. First, it is important to be aware of the difference between good tequila, made from 100 percent agave, and lower quality tequila. Good tequila has a bold flavor and can help improve your digestive tract, fight memory loss and even help you lose weight. Blanco is the purest type of tequila. It is made from 100 percent blue agave, and it is purer than tequilas that contain sugar as a mixer. Remember to drink responsibly. Also, here are some benefits of enjoying tequila!

Health Benefits of Tequila

Digestion

Having a drink of tequila right after a meal actually aids in the digestion process. But a shot before a meal also stimulates your appetite and metabolism.

Dementia

Multiple studies found that moderate amounts of alcohol can help with memory retention. One study found that older adults who consumed anywhere from 8 and 14 alcoholic drinks per week decreased their dementia risk by 37 percent. However, more than 14 drinks a week doubled the normal risk for dementia. The moral – drink in moderation.

Probiotic and Prebiotic

Fructans, a short-chained polymer, supplies the good bacteria in your intestines. A prebiotic nurtures the good bacteria that is already present in the colon. A naturally occurring form of fructose called fructans help increase the amount of lactobacilli and  bifidobacteria, which acts as a prebiotic.

Osteoporosis

Along with being prebiotics, fructans can benefit your bones as well! Mice who were fed fructans took more calcium from their food, and they lost less calcium through excretion than normal mice. Furthermore, they experienced heightened levels of a protein called osteocalcin. Osteocalcin is linked to bone tissue growth. Agave fructans could help your bones stay strong.

Weight Loss

Agavins, a type of sugar found in tequila, can actually aid in weight loss. This sugar does not raise blood sugar, and they cannot be digested by the body. Scientists have linked Agavins to a hormone called GLP-1, which keeps the stomach fuller for a longer period of time. Researchers discovered that mice, who they fed water to with the sugar added, ate less than their counterparts.

Sleeping Aide

While you should not rely on any substance to get to sleep on a regular basis, tequila has calming qualities that might help you unwind, calm your nerves and drift off.
