Job Hunting Tips

job hunting

The recent pandemic left a lot of people jobless as a result of the lockdowns. However, now that most businesses are starting to open up, it may be time to start job searching. And just in case you have been out of the game too long, or just starting, here are a few job-hunting tips you can use on your quest for employment.

Set career goals

First and foremost, you should determine your own career goals. Job searching is hard enough as it is, so you want to make sure you have a clear idea of the type of job you want. It narrows down the search and keeps you focused on your future career path.

Planning

Now that you have decided on the type of job you are looking for, you should begin crafting a plan that will inform your job hunt. Planning could include deciding how much time you will dedicate to the search, updating your resume and professional profiles, and keeping a list of jobs you have already applied to.

Network

It is always said that “it’s not what you know, but who you know”, and that can be the truth with most job hunts. You should take advantage of all the professional resources you have. That may mean reaching out to an old colleague or friend and ask about possible job opportunities. Most positions are filled with recommendations, so it is important to make connections.

Customize your resume

Your resume is the most important tool while job hunting. You should always keep it up to date and you want to customize it towards the particular job you are applying for. This would require you researching the company and specifically the job description provided about your position of interest. Make sure you highlight any experience or skills that would look good for that job.

Prepare for an interview

The interview could be the make-or-break point in a job search. To have a successful interview, you want to do some preparation. This is going to require research over the company. You want to make sure you understand what they do and be able to ask compelling questions to the interviewer. You should also have some answers already prepared for common interview questions.

Follow-up

After you have gone through your interview, it always looks good to follow-up. This can be done in the form of a thank you card. Let them know that you were grateful for the opportunity and you hope to hear back from them soon. It shows you have initiative and are very interested in the job opportunity.

These are just some pretty basic tips that should help you along with your search for a job. You rarely get the first job you apply for, so do not get discouraged and continue job hunting. You got this!
