Fruits and vegetables such as red cabbage, kiwi, and bell peppers are also good sources of vitamin C.

Why do I need Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is powerful in preserving and mending the human body. This immune-boosting vitamin helps fortify your body’s defense against illness and infection. Several experts suggest that those who regularly take vitamin C supplements may have briefer bouts of the common cold or slightly milder symptoms, but medical studies do not necessarily support that assertion. Research indicates that consuming food or supplements abundant in vitamin C does not diminish the chances of getting a cold. However, that same study eventually found that vitamin C appears useful to people conducting short periods of intense physical exercise.

This potent vitamin has many other exceptional physiological effects on your body. Vitamin C assists in healing wounds and forming scar tissue. It also sustains and repairs cartilage, bones, and teeth. Furthermore, vitamin C supports your body in metabolizing protein and absorbing iron. The vitamin also builds a protein used to make skin, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps your immune system by fighting off harmful molecules called free radicals. Free radicals form when your body breaks down food or is exposed to toxic substances. Tobacco smoke, air pollution, pesticides, and radiation are a few examples of these substances. These free radicals can cause cell damage, illness, and aging. Vitamin C can help prevent some of the damages caused by free radicals in your body.

Should I take supplements?

Always ask your doctor or physician before taking a vitamin supplement. Medical experts recommend a daily vitamin C dosage of 75 milligrams for women and 90 milligrams for men. If you eat a healthy diet, you should get an adequate amount of vitamin C and other necessary nutrients.
