One study found that listening to classical music can significantly lower a person’s blood pressure while other types of music raise blood pressure levels.  Participants performed a challenging three-minute arithmetic task and were randomly assigned to listen to either classical, jazz, or pop music or have no music present.

Tuning into classical music can also help the brain. Italian scientists discovered that composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s music increased participants’ brain activity connected to memory, cognition, and an open mind to problem-solving.

Additional research found that classical music can help individuals battle low- and medium-grade depression. Musical therapy was provided to a group of people for 50 minutes each day for eight weeks. The study found that those who listened to classical music displayed fewer depressive symptoms than those who underwent psychotherapy and did not listen to music.

Other research at Brunel University conducted randomized clinical trials with hospital surgery patients listening to different types of classical music. Findings suggest patients who listened to music, either before, during, or after surgery, experienced less anxiety, diminished pain, and more patient satisfaction. The study also discovered that the patients listening to classical music needed significantly less pain medication than other patients. The difference in pain medication administered was the equivalent of one dose of painkilling medicine.

Can listening to classical music help me sleep better?

Further studies have shown that listening to classical music about 45 minutes before bed can help improve a person’s sleep quality. Research determined that those who listened to softer music before sleeping had significantly better sleep quality elements. Those components include better-perceived sleep quality, longer sleep duration, greater sleep efficiency, shorter sleep latency, less sleep disturbance, and less daytime dysfunction.

Can listening to classical music improve my work habits?

Exposure to classical music potentially improves a person’s work productivity. Scientists at the University of Maryland studied the impact of listening to baroque classical music on the work efficiency of radiologists.  Research revealed that radiologists felt they were in a better mood and had greater work satisfaction when listening to baroque music in their reading room. According to the study, the workers’ happier mood and greater work satisfaction could theoretically enhance diagnostic efficiency and accuracy.
