Legend credits Hercules with the founding of Barcelona. But the identity of the actual founders is a matter of dispute. The area became part of the Roman Empire in 19 BC. In subsequent centuries, the city was occupied by the Visigoths then the Moors. In the 19th century AD, it was ruled by the Spanish monarchy then annexed by Napoleonic France. Barcelona’s rich history makes it the fascinating cosmopolitan city it is today.
